KIU, Main Campus-KIU Alumnus Ibrahim Ruhweza has attributed his recent achievement in journalism to telling stories that provide solutions to common problems in Society. He wants Journalism Students to follow suit.

The New Vision reporter scooped the award for the best Justice, Law and Order reporter during the 2024 National Journalism Awards organised by the African Center for Media Excellence on July 31st, 2024.

First, we asked him how he reached this milestone.

"I investigated topics that were of human interest for example human trafficking, drug abuse, night attacks, among others," he narrated.

"The authorities got concerned and immediately stepped in to restore order after most of these stories were published. Judges for the National Journalism Awards were interested in such stories that give solutions to problems, that's how I won," he added.

Ruhweza expressed confidence in KIU Students he has encountered at New Vision and thinks they can do even better once they pay more attention to telling stories that answer societies' problems.

"Students can do better if they pay much attention to stories that answer problems of the people in the communities, that's our role as journalists to act as watchdogs," he said

He added, "Students need to learn from already established journalists as well but Top Universities in Uganda most importantly, give enough time to the stories they opt to write."

Ruhweza is one of the KIU mass communication graduates who is exploring the heights of media in Uganda and beyond.

The future of journalism in Uganda is, even more, brighter as KIU continues to produce top-notch storytellers of Ruhweza's caliber.
